Guitar, Electric Bass, Jazz Combo, and Blue Grass Instructor Mr. Jay

Jay Reed’s style and range in guitar has no limit but one; it’s got to be authentic. Reed’s journey as a musician has been influenced by the classic rock sounds of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, the technical brilliance and inimitable swing of Oscar Peterson, and the more modern sounds of John Scofield and Wayne Krantz, to name just a few.

Reed completed the Mohawk College Applied Music program in Hamilton, Canada, where he studied jazz theory and history, small group and big band arranging, and received ensemble and private guitar instruction with some of the best jazz musicians in Canada. Upon receiving his diploma, he began performing as both a leader and sideman in and around the Toronto area. Over his 20 plus years of performing, Reed has played well over 1000 gigs, and has presented original music at the Brantford International Jazz Festival, the TD Niagara Jazz Festival, Willowbank Jazz Festival and In The Soil Arts Festival, among others.

In addition to gigging professionally since the age of 17, Reed has successfully taught students for more than 20 years whose ages have ranged from 8 to 65. Specializing in improvisation and jazz theory, Reed is skilled at preparing intermediate to advanced players for college and university music program auditions; his students have gone on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, York University and Humber College in Toronto, Canada, and Mohawk College in Hamilton, Canada. Some have gone on to form successful groups that perform in large venues and have toured in Europe, Japan and other countries around the world.

Piano Instructor Ms. Jayne

Jayne discovered her love for music when she began piano lessons at age eight. Inspired by her grandmother, mother, and sister, who are also accomplished musicians, she eventually became proficient on seven instruments including piano, organ, bagpipes, bass, cello, viola, and guitar. Jayne participated in All State orchestra four consecutive years during high school and also All Northwest her senior year. She obtained her associate’s degree in piano performance from Casper College, and played bass with the Wyoming Symphony from 2011-2013. In 2016, she obtained a second associate’s degree in psychology with the intent to explore a career in clinical music therapy, specializing in developmental disabilities.

Before her employment at VIBES, Jayne didn’t consider the connections between teaching and her career goals. Since starting at VIBES, she has discovered a passion for teaching. The philosophy, “expression; not perfection,” is at the core of both teaching and performing music. Currently, Jayne is working on a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Wyoming Outreach School. Upon completion of that and a master’s, Jayne’s goal is to continue teaching music and include lessons as part of her practice as a music therapist.

Outside of music Jayne enjoys backpacking, creative writing, and recently discovered a love for distance running. She has completed several half marathons and has a goal to run a full marathon in the next year.

An avid arranger of music, his works vary from rock/pop covers, church hymns for weekly worship, re-orchestrations of large-scale works, and art song reimagined for performance by friends and colleagues. Prior to arriving at Casper College, Mietz served as an Adjunct Instructor at both Fort Lewis and San Juan Colleges, as well as the Director of Choirs at the First United Methodist Church in Durango, Colorado. He also directed a clarinet choir comprised of musicians from the Four Corners Region of the American Southwest.

His doctoral document examined David Maslanka’s Desert Roads from the perspective of a clarinetist and a conductor. It contains the transcription of an interview detailing Maslanka’s fascinating compositional technique.

While at the University of Montana-Missoula, Mietz served as the E-flat/bass clarinetist with the Missoula Symphony and studied Applied Clarinet with Maxine Ramey and conducting with Stephen Bolstad, Kevin Griggs, and Luis Milan.

Prior to his study at the University of Montana, Mietz taught junior high and high school band/orchestra in the public schools of Colorado as well as performed with the Denver Pops Orchestra. Mietz received a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from the University of Colorado-Boulder and studied clarinet with Daniel Silver, Bil Jackson, and Phillip Aaholm. He also studied conducting with Allan McMurray.
