“I took music lessons as a child… I sure wish I would have kept playing! This phrase is common among adults - especially when they see (with awe) how much their children are learning and growing in their music lessons and classes.

Many adults have a bucket list… is music on yours?

Turn “someday” into “I did it!”

For adults specifically, learning music can bring a myriad of benefits!

It can lower depression and stress rates, improve memory, and help prevent age-related loss of hearing. It can also improve reaction time and help your breathing and lung strength. The list goes on and on.

Taking music lessons as an adult can bring empowerment, delight, and fulfillment. A 2009 poll showed that 85 percent of adults in the US wished they had learned an instrument, and that most adults believed music could be learned at any age. So why don’t more adults take music lessons?

Many adults worry that it’s “too late” to become a student again.

Adults can and do learn just as quickly as younger students, and are usually very successful as they progress.

An adult’s brain is often focused and determined, which can help. Having a strong reading/writing comprehension can also give adult learners an advantage over younger learners.

Here are four steps to making your musical journey exciting and enjoyable:

  1. Decide what you want to learn. Keep an open mind and explore options!

  2. Find a teacher. A music studio is an excellent option because you are guaranteed consistency, which helps your growth as well as your confidence.

  3. Communicate with your teacher! A major advantage of taking lessons as an adult is that you are in control of what you’d like to play and learn. Are you wanting to try several instruments? Are you yearning to learn your favorite song? Your teacher can help you reach your goals.

  4. Practice! Another asset adult learners have is setting your own schedule. Do you focus best in the morning? Right after dinner? You have the power to design your own practice and lesson schedule.

Worried you don’t have enough time to practice? If the only music you get in your week is your lesson, that is okay! That time can still bring benefits. Many students see their weekly lessons as self care; they love having time designated for music each week.

Don’t let doubt stop you from doing something you’ve always wanted to do!

Many great figures in history have enjoyed playing music as a part of their adult life. Coincidence? We’ll let you decide! Albert Einstein played the piano and violin, Charles Dickens played the accordion, and Neil Armstrong played the baritone horn. Thomas Jefferson played the violin and cello, Franklin Roosevelt played the piano, and Bill Clinton plays the saxophone.

It’s never too late to learn something new. You can always be discovering new passions and talents! Learning music increases the happiness and development of humans as a whole.

Anytime. Any place. At any age.
